Mistakes to Avoid on Your Phlebotomist Resume

Want a career in Phlebotomy? Finding the perfect job starts with your resume. You have one piece of paper to convince an employer to hire you. Therefore, it is very important that your resume not only catches attention, but also provides complete information about you.

While you are free to put whatever you like in your resume in order to promote yourself, there are certain mistakes that you need to avoid when writing your Phlebotomist resume. Here are some of them:

False Information on Your Resume

Yes, it may be possible for you to land the phlebotomy job you want by putting untruthful information on your resume. However, many companies perform a thorough background check. Getting caught in a lie will not only ruin your chances of a job, but it will also tarnish your reputation with the institution.

Using Fancy Fonts and Styles

Many career websites will tell you to make sure that you stand out from the crowd with a unique resume.  However, using fancy fonts and styles can distract from the information you are presenting. When writing a resume, you want to convey that you are organized and professional with a simple, easy-to-read format.

Grammatical Errors and Typos

You may not be applying for a job as a writer, but your resume has to be grammatically accurate with no punctuation or spelling errors. Remember, the duties of a Phlebotomy Technician may also include some clerical tasks. If your resume has grammatical errors or typos in it, many employers will not even consider you for the job.

Writing an Unclear Objective

The objective section of your resume gives an overview of your professional goals. Yes, employers actually read this section.  However, employers may lose interest in vague flowery words that only state general information. It is very important to be specific and concise. Since you are aiming for a Phlebotomy Technician position, indicate this information in your objective.

Overemphasis on Duties

It may be tempting to write down all the duties you have performed as a Phlebotomy Technician in your previous job.  Some skills are implied and don’t need to be listed.  While you should include some of the basics, try to also include tasks that show advanced ability or managerial duties.  You should also list any awards you have won or special duties outside of your job, such as committees or counsel positions.

Cutting Short on Important Information

In order to keep your resume down to the one page limit, you may be tempted to eliminate some important information.  By changing the format of  your resume, you should be able to include all of the pertinent information that will allow a potential employer to see your value.  Do some research to find different professional resume styles that may work better for you and allow you to keep all of your important information on display.

Questionable References

Try to only include references that pertain to your phlebotomy experience.  You may include teachers and clinical site instructors if you are a new Phlebotomy Technician.  Be sure to let all of your references know that they may be receiving a call from a potential employer on your behalf.

Giving employers a well-crafted, professional resume will allow you to have the advantage in the job market.  By avoiding these mistakes, you will be more likely to get the job you want.
